The second problem facing the organisers was the inability of some of our regular performers to send a team this year, including LSR, St Stephen’s College, Shyama Prasad Mukherji College, Jamia Millia University and Ashoka University. Dr Sharma also honoured us by welcoming all the assembled audience and teams at the start of the event, but it was really unfortunate that Dr Babli Moitra Saraf could not be present as well. These new trophies looked splendid when they went on display at the prize giving alongside the SSI trophy for Best Overall Performance and we were delighted to have the Vice Principal of the college, Dr Jyoti Trehan Sharma, onstage to give away these two trophies. College for donating not one but two rolling trophies to this competition: one for the Most Original Concept and the other for Best Play in Shakespeare’s Original Language. We also must thank the Principal and the Governing Body of I.P. Her generosity towards the SSI and her encouragement of this competition by offering us the use of her college’s auditorium and every kind of help from I.P.’s Dramatic Society members, has raised the competition to new heights and been highly appreciated by the SSI and the participating teams, Furthermore, Dr Saraf’s academic interests in Shakespeare and in translation and adaptation mesh perfectly with the SSI’s efforts to encourage young people to engage with Shakespeare in exciting and original ways through enacting scenes based on his plays. College, who had most unfortunately suffered a bereavement in her family two days before the event. Though the enthusiasm of the participating teams was as high as usual and the stagecraft of the more experienced teams showed how much they had practiced for the event, several things occurred to make this slightly more low-key than in recent years.įirstly, we sadly missed the presence of Dr Babli Moitra Saraf, Principal of I.P. An efficient team from JMC worked on the registration desk all day. College ensured that all arrangements were in place and everything proceeded smoothly. Dr Bhavna Malhotra and her team of volunteers from I.P. Our usual sponsor, Worldview, again provided the prizes and some financial aid. We had a stellar line-up of judges in Kusum Haidar, Ravi Raj Sagar and Jonathan Gil Harris, and the presence of a distinguished guest, Sunit Tandon, who has also often served as judge. The tenth Annual National Drama Competition of the Shakespeare Society of India was held in collaboration with Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi, on Saturday 1 st February 2020.
